First of all go to the Start button (the one in the bottom left hand corner of the screen that looks like the Windows logo) and click on it.
Now select Settings from the menu directly above the Start button and in the window that appears you’ll need to find and click on Update & Security.
This opens up another window with a column on the left which has Windows Update at the top. Make sure this is highlighted in blue then look in the main panel on the right. Here you’ll see Windows Update at the top of the screen and beneath it that last time the system was updated. If you want to see if there are any new updates available then click the Check for Updates button.
At the bottom of the screen you’ll see Advanced options written in blue text. Click on this to open up the next window.
Here you’ll see the heading Choose how updates are installed, with a drop down box below that gives you the options of Automatic (Recommended) or Notify to schedule restart. If it isn’t already, select Automatic.
That’s it. Now Windows will periodically search for updates and then apply them as they arrive. To see which ones have been applied in the past just click on the View your update history option.
If you’d prefer not to receive updates automatically then you can turn off the feature. We’ve prepared a short guide to this already, so check out our How to disable updates in Windows 10 for more details, but we think you should leave the updates on if you want to get the best from Windows.
